Stephen Bunting
Stephen Bunting, Managing Partner
has more than 25 years experience of life science venture capital investment. He joined Abingworth in 1987 and became its Managing Director in 2002. Stephen has been a Director of a number of companies in the US and Europe and was Founding Chairman of Astex Therapeutics, Devgen and Hexagen. Other directorships have included Ablynx, Aurora Biosciences and Genetic Therapy. Before joining Abingworth, he worked for N M Rothschild & Sons as an adviser to Biotechnology Investments Limited. At Abingworth he is responsible for building and leading the team and for investment strategy. He is active in UK and Continental European deals. Stephen has a PhD in Biological Sciences.

David Leathers
David Leathers, Partner
has over 25 years of life science venture investment experience. His directorships have included GeneMedicine, GenPharm International and Pharming. Before joining Abingworth in 1987 he worked at N M Rothschild & Sons where he was involved in setting up and managing Biotechnology Investments Limited, whose early-stage venture portfolio included Amgen, Genzyme and Immunex. He qualified as a chartered accountant in 1966 and stayed in the profession until he joined the investment division of N M Rothschild & Sons in 1972, becoming a Director of Rothschild Asset Management in 1978. David has primary responsibility for Abingworth’s investor relations.

James Abell
James Abell, Partner
has nine years of venture capital experience and three years of operational experience in life science companies. His directorships have included Chroma Therapeutics, Clinical Designs and Syntaxin. He joined Abingworth as CFO in 1998, prior to which he was CFO of Prolifix from 1995 to 1998. From 1994 to 1996 he worked as a consultant for the Medical Research Council where he advised the founders of start-up biotechnology companies. He trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG and stayed with them from 1983 to 1993. He holds a degree in Biology with Chemistry from the University of Southampton. James handles Abingworth’s finance and administration as well as investment matters, focusing on start-up companies where he offers substantial operational support.

Joe Anderson
Joe Anderson, Partner
has more than 20 years experience as an analyst and investment manager in the pharmaceutical and bioscience sectors. Joe joined Abingworth in 2004 from First State Investments in London, part of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, where he launched and managed the Global Health and Biotechnology Fund. Prior to this, he was Pharmaceuticals Analyst at investment bank, Dresdner Kleinwort Benson. Previously Joe was Head of Policy at the Wellcome Trust where he led a team researching and advising the Board on investment opportunities in medical science globally. He has a PhD in Biochemistry. Joe manages Abingworth's investments in public equities including private investments post-IPO. He is also Portfolio Manager for Abingworth BioEquities, an open-ended fund launched in July 2005 to invest in under-valued public companies in life sciences globally.

Tim Haines
Tim Haines, Partner
has more than 23 years of international management experience in the life sciences industry. Before joining Abingworth in 2005 he was Chief Executive of the Abingworth portfolio company, Astex Therapeutics. Tim was with Astex for more than five years and was instrumental in establishing it as one of the leading UK biotechnology companies. During his time at Astex, the company accessed more than £50 million in venture capital and closed over $1 billion in deal value potential with pharmaceutical companies. Previously, Tim was Chief Executive of two divisions of the publicly-listed medical technology company, Datascope Corp. Prior to Datascope, he held a number of other senior management positions in the US and Europe. Current and past board positions include Astex Therapeutics, Fovea, IMI, PowderMed and XCounter. Tim has a BSc from Exeter University and an MBA from INSEAD. At Abingworth, he identifies and creates new businesses and provides support for portfolio companies.

Genghis Lloyd-Harris
Genghis Lloyd-Harris, Partner
joined Abingworth in 2004 from Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) where he was a Managing Director in the European Equity Research Group based in London. Genghis was responsible for coverage of the European biotechnology industry and was ranked first for Pan-European Biotechnology in the Institutional Investor surveys each year from 2001 to 2003. Before joining Equity Research at CSFB, he worked for CSFB's Health Care Group in the Investment Banking Division in New York. Genghis was previously a paediatrician in Melbourne, Australia. He holds a Medical Degree from the University of Liverpool in the UK, a PhD in Clinical Pharmacology from the University of Melbourne, Australia, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Genghis focuses on exits of Abingworth’s venture investments via mergers and acquisitions and IPOs as well as venture investment in the UK and Continental Europe.

Andy Sandham
Andy Sandham, Venture Partner
has 30 years of experience in the healthcare sector, during which he has performed a broad spectrum of roles covering corporate strategy, operational management, business development and marketing. He has contributed to the establishment of successful drug discovery and development companies in Europe and the US. Before joining Abingworth in 2006, he was CEO and Co-Founder of Ionix Pharmaceuticals, which was divested to Vernalis in 2005. Prior to this he served as Chief Operating Officer of Signature BioScience, Hexagen and Cantab Pharmaceuticals. Andy has also held business development and marketing positions at Amersham, Celltech and Roche. His current board positions include NeurAxon, Novacta Biosystems, Syntaxin and Synosia Therapeutics. Andy has a BSc in Chemistry from University of East Anglia and a Diploma in Marketing from the Institute of Marketing. At Abingworth, he helps to identify and create new businesses and provide strategic and operational support for portfolio companies.

Alex Asquith
Alex Asquith, Assistant Counsel
joined Abingworth in 2005 having previously been a member of the UK legal team at The BOC Group plc, where she was responsible for providing legal advice on a wide range of issues to one of BOC's lines of business. Alex trained as a solicitor at the London offices of Slaughter and May and was an assistant solicitor in the corporate and commercial department from 1994-1999. Alex's role at Abingworth is to assist the General Counsel and Chief Financial Officer as well as to provide legal support to the life sciences team.

John Heard
John Heard, General Counsel
has completed more than 80 venture capital financings and exits for life science and technology start-up companies across Europe and in the US. He has also been actively involved in initiatives to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of venture capital deal structuring across Europe. John joined Abingworth in 2006 from Intel Capital, the venture capital investment arm of Intel Corporation, where he was European Legal Counsel. Prior to this, John was an Associate at the international financial law practise, Hughes Hubbard & Reed, based in Washington, DC, US, and subsequently in Paris, France. He is a member of the District of Columbia and Maryland State Bars, and has qualified as a UK Solicitor. At Abingworth, John is responsible for deal co-ordination and provides legal assistance to the life sciences team in their investment programme.

David Kirkpatrick, Principal, Analyst
joined Abingworth in 2006 from Waterstock Asset Management where he was a derivatives analyst specialising in biotechnology stocks. He joined Waterstock in 1998 after graduating from the University of Plymouth with a degree in Earth Science. At Abingworth, David focuses on risk management of public life science investments, including providing support to Abingworth BioEquities, an open-ended fund investing in under-valued public companies in life sciences globally.

Sarah Shackelton
Sarah Shackelton, Principal, Marketing and Management Teams
joined Abingworth in 2004 from Coulter Partners, the leading biotech boutique, where she managed senior level search projects for healthcare clients, including venture capital firms and their portfolio companies. Previously, she worked in emerging technology and private equity recruitment at Spencer Stuart, London, and within the healthcare team at Ken Clark International, London. Sarah worked with the pharmaceutical industry as a US trade negotiator and consultant. She has a BA in International Relations from Pomona College, California, and an MA in Public Affairs from Princeton University. Sarah expands Abingworth's relationships with key industry executives and entrepreneurs and assists Abingworth's portfolio companies with their recruitment needs.

John Shields
John Shields, Principal, Science and Technology
has 13 years of operational experience in life science companies. He joined Abingworth in 2001 from Cantab Pharmaceuticals where he was Senior Vice-President, Research. He had a strong role in business development and played a significant part in the in-licensing of new products and technologies to the firm. Prior to Cantab, he was at the Glaxo Institute for Molecular Biology in Geneva, Switzerland. From 1982 to 1988, he held research positions at the Institute of Child Health, the University of London, UK. John has a PhD in Immunology from the University of Glasgow. He has published more than 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals including Science. At Abingworth, John is involved with scientific evaluation of new and existing investments and works closely with UK universities and early-stage companies.

Victoria Stewart, Principal, Public Relations
has more than 13 years experience in the life sciences sector. She joined Abingworth in 2000 from PJB Publications where she was Biotechnology Editor of Scrip World Pharmaceutical News. Victoria has held editorial positions at Chemistry in Britain and the Financial Times where she covered Pharmaceutical Business News, Biotechnology Business and Medical Device Business News. She has a degree in Biological Chemistry from the University of Kent at Canterbury. At Abingworth, Victoria manages and advises on Abingworth's public relations strategy in Europe and the US.

Kristin Woolley
Kristin Woolley, Principal, Due Diligence
has more than three years experience in clinical research in biotechnology companies including Fibrogen Inc., and four years experience in life science investments at SCO Capital and Perseus Soros Biopharmaceutical fund (now Aisling Capital). She has a degree in Molecular Biology from Princeton University.
